Understanding the Process of Teeth Whitening

Understanding the Process of Teeth Whitening

Understanding the Process of Teeth Whitening

A bright, white smile can boost your confidence and enhance your appearance. However, many factors can contribute to tooth discoloration, making teeth whitening a popular cosmetic dental treatment. At Kissing Camels Family Dentistry, we aim to provide our patients with the best options for achieving a radiant smile. As the best dentist in Colorado Springs, CO, we’re here to guide you through the process of teeth whitening and help you understand how it works.

What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Before diving into the whitening process, it’s essential to understand what causes tooth discoloration. Several factors can lead to stained or yellowed teeth:

  • Diet: Certain foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and berries, can stain your teeth over time.
  • Tobacco Use: Smoking or chewing tobacco contributes significantly to tooth staining.
  • Aging: As you age, the enamel on your teeth naturally wears down, exposing the yellowish dentin underneath.
  • Poor Oral Hygiene: Inadequate brushing and flossing can lead to plaque buildup and staining.
  • Medications: Some medications, particularly certain antibiotics, can cause discoloration, especially in children.
  • Genetics: Your genetic makeup can influence the natural color of your teeth.

Understanding these causes can help you take preventive measures and decide if teeth whitening is the right option for you.

The Teeth Whitening Process

At Kissing Camels Family Dentistry, we offer both in-office and at-home teeth whitening options. Here’s a step-by-step overview of the whitening process for each method:

In-Office Teeth Whitening

In-office teeth whitening is one of the most effective and quickest ways to achieve a brighter smile. Here’s what you can expect during the process:

  1. Initial Consultation: Your journey begins with a consultation at Kissing Camels Family Dentistry. During this visit, our dentist will examine your teeth and discuss your whitening goals. We will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.

  2. Teeth Cleaning: Before the whitening treatment, your teeth will be professionally cleaned to remove plaque and debris. This ensures the whitening gel can penetrate your teeth evenly.

  3. Preparation: We will protect your gums and lips using a rubber dam or protective gel. This step prevents irritation from the whitening agent.

  4. Application of Whitening Gel: A high-concentration bleaching gel is applied to your teeth. The gel contains hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which breaks down stains and discoloration.

  5. Activation: Depending on the system used, a special light or laser may be applied to enhance the whitening process. This activation accelerates the chemical reaction, resulting in quicker and more effective results.

  6. Duration: The in-office whitening session typically takes about 60-90 minutes. You may see immediate results after just one visit.

  7. Post-Treatment Care: After the whitening procedure, we’ll provide you with tips on how to maintain your bright smile. This includes dietary recommendations and proper oral hygiene practices.

At-Home Teeth Whitening

For those who prefer the convenience of whitening at home, Kissing Camels Family Dentistry offers custom at-home whitening kits. Here’s how the process works:

  1. Consultation: Similar to in-office whitening, the process begins with a consultation. We will discuss your goals and determine if at-home whitening is the best option for you.

  2. Custom Trays: We create custom-fitted whitening trays based on impressions of your teeth. These trays ensure a snug fit, allowing for even distribution of the whitening gel.

  3. Whitening Gel: We provide you with professional-grade whitening gel that contains a higher concentration of bleaching agents than over-the-counter products. This ensures more effective results.

  4. Usage Instructions: You’ll receive detailed instructions on how to use the whitening trays and gel. Typically, the trays are worn for a specified period each day over a couple of weeks, depending on your desired level of whitening.

  5. Gradual Results: Unlike in-office whitening, at-home treatments may take longer to achieve your desired results. However, many patients appreciate the flexibility and comfort of whitening at their own pace.

Safety and Effectiveness

Teeth whitening is generally safe when performed by a qualified dentist or using approved products. However, some patients may experience temporary sensitivity during or after the treatment. At Kissing Camels Family Dentistry, we take every precaution to minimize sensitivity and ensure your comfort throughout the process.

Choosing the Right Method

When deciding between in-office and at-home whitening, consider the following factors:

  • Time Constraints: If you need quick results for an upcoming event, in-office whitening is the best choice.
  • Budget: In-office treatments may be more expensive than at-home kits, so consider your budget when making a decision.
  • Convenience: If you prefer to whiten your teeth on your schedule, at-home kits offer flexibility.

Maintaining Your Bright Smile

After undergoing teeth whitening, it’s essential to maintain your results. Here are some tips for keeping your smile bright:

  • Practice Good Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss your teeth regularly to prevent plaque buildup.
  • Limit Stain-Causing Foods and Beverages: Reduce your intake of coffee, tea, red wine, and dark-colored foods that can stain your teeth.
  • Avoid Tobacco Products: Quitting smoking or using tobacco can help prevent further discoloration.
  • Regular Dental Check-Ups: Visit Kissing Camels Family Dentistry for routine cleanings and check-ups to maintain your oral health.

3 Reasons Dental Implants Might Be Right For You

3 Reason Dental Implants Might Be Right For You

Dental Implants in Colorado Springs: 3 Benefits You Didn’t Know About

A lot of people are unhappy with their smiles. In fact, over 50% of Americans don’t like their teeth. And it’s not hard to see why; our teeth are constantly under attack from the food and drinks we consume, as well as the aging process. Thankfully, there are ways to combat these problems and restore your smile. One such way is through dental implants in Colorado Springs.

Dental implants have become increasingly popular in recent years, and it’s not hard to see why. They are a versatile solution that can be used to replace one tooth or a whole mouthful of teeth. They are also strong and durable, meaning they can last a lifetime with proper care. However, there are some benefits of dental implants that may not be so obvious. In this blog post, we will be taking a look at three benefits of dental implants in Colorado Springs that you may not have considered before.

Dental Implants Improve Your Overall Oral Health

While dental implants are mostly used for cosmetic purposes, they can also improve your overall oral health. This is because when you lose a tooth, the bone around that tooth starts to deteriorate. This can lead to further complications such as infection or even the loss of more teeth. Dental implants help to combat this by stimulating the growth of new bone around the implant site. This helps to keep your jawbone strong and healthy and reduces the risk of further tooth loss.

Dental Implants Look and Feel Natural

When most people think of false teeth, they think of clunky pieces of plastic that are clearly fake and uncomfortable to wear. However, this is not the case with dental implants! Dental implants look just like natural teeth and feel very comfortable in your mouth. This is because they are made from materials that are biocompatible with human tissue, such as titanium.

Dental Implants Can Help You Eat The Foods You Love

If you have ever worn dentures, then you know that there are some foods you have to avoid because they are too tough or sticky for dentures. This can be very frustrating because it means you have to miss out on some of your favorite foods! However, thanks to their strength and stability, dental implants allow you to eat whatever you want without worrying about them slipping or falling out of your mouth.

There are many benefits of dental implants in Colorado Springs that make them an attractive option for people who are looking to improve their smiles. If you are considering getting dental implants yourself, then be sure to get in touch with a reputable implant dentist in Colorado Springs who can assess your individual needs and give you the best possible treatment plan.

Invisalign vs. Braces

Invisalign vs. Braces - Colorado Springs Co

Invisalign vs. Braces

Comparing Invisalign vs. Braces in Colorado Springs

For many years, traditional metal braces have been used to correct teeth. However, Invisalign clear aligners have become very popular. Invisalign aligners are more expensive than traditional braces, but because they provide key benefits, traditional braces do not offer. Our Colorado Springs dentists offer Invisalign or Clear Correct aligners at our dental office. In this article, we compare the pros and cons of Invisalign vs. braces.

Invisalign vs. Braces: Which is Better?

Many people who are considering orthodontic treatment wonder if Invisalign works as well as traditional braces. Invisalign has been successfully straightening smiles for over 20 years. As more advanced dental technology continues to come out, Kissing Camels Family Dentistry can solve about 95% of dental problems just by using Invisalign. As we mentioned before, traditional braces are the more affordable option. Additionally, our friend Dr. Beth Herko, a dentist in New Providence, NJ, points out that some patients are not the right candidate for Invisalign or braces. You can always set up a virtual dental consultation with one of our doctors. We will help you decide which treatment is best for you.

Advantages of Invisalign

At Kissing Camels Family Dentistry, the benefits of Invisalign outweigh those of traditional braces. Some of these advantages include:

  • Subtle treatment.
  • No brackets or wires are needed.
  • Easily removable for eating, drinking, and brushing teeth.
  • There are no dietary restrictions during therapy.
  • Custom aligners are more comfortable.

Brace Advantages

  • Fixes all dental imperfections
  • There are several to pick from, including lingual and ceramic.
  • Customization for brackets and bands.

Cons of Invisalign

  • Invisalign transparent aligners are a commitment. Patients must wear their aligners for 22 hours a day until treatment is over.
  • If aligners are not properly cared for, they can be lost.
  • Only approximately 5% of severe cases can be treated (but can correct more than 95 percent )

Braces Drawbacks

  • When speaking, smiling, or taking photographs, braces are very evident.
  • Brushing and flossing properly is tough, which can result in stains and other oral hygiene difficulties.
  • There are a variety of food restrictions, including popular snacks such as popcorn, chewing gum, and hard candies.
  • Require frequent visits to the dentist
  • Broken brackets and other mishaps necessitate further orthodontist visits.
  • Furthermore, patients may cut their mouths on their brackets when doing activities.

Contact Kissing Camels Family Dentistry

So, which option is for me? Invisalign vs. Braces. Ultimately, Invisalign and traditional braces both offer so many benefits. Since every smile is different, one treatment might be better than the other. If you’d like to have the perfect smile, contact Kissing Camels Family Dentistry in Colorado Springs, CO. Celebrate National Gum Care Month

Celebrating Gum Care Month

Celebrating Gum Care Month with Colorado Springs Dentists

Preventative dentistry is a priority for us at Kissing Camels Family Dentistry. Our Colorado Springs dentists always encourage our patients to practice good oral health habits. In honor of September being National Gum Care Month, we are sharing a few ways you can improve your gum health.

About Gum Disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a long-term infection of your gums. Without treatment early on, it causes loss of gum tissue, underlying bone, and, eventually, tooth loss. By the age of 45, more than 80% of Americans have some kind of gum disease. Fortunately, gum disease can easily be prevented.

Early Signs of Gum Disease

Gum disease can go without being noticed in the early stages, which is why it’s important to take care of your teeth daily. Some of the early signs of gum disease include:

  • Swollen/red gums
  • Sensitivity to hot/cold drinks or foods
  • Receding gums
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing teeth
  • Shifts in your smile

How to Care For Your Mouth & Avoid Gum Disease

  • Brush your teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. Sticky plaque constantly forms on the teeth, and if left there, it quickly hardens into tartar. This is a hard substance that can only be removed by your hygienist. Plaque and tartar can contribute to gum disease.
  • Floss on a regular basis. In this case, regularly should be understood as “every day.” Brushing your teeth removes plaque, but only floss can clean in between teeth.
  • To remove tiny particles and minimize plaque, our friend Dr. Dave Moghadam, a dentist in Easton, PA, recommends using mouthwash. Mouthwash does not replace brushing and flossing, but when used in conjunction with other healthy practices, it can help to freshen breath, eradicate bacteria, and keep teeth strong.
  • Consume a well-balanced diet. A nutritious, balanced diet high in vitamins and nutrients and low in sugar will help your immune system fight off harmful bacteria, inflammation, and illness. Remember to eat your greens if you want to keep your teeth white!
  • Every six months, visit your dentist in Colorado Springs, CO, for a thorough cleaning. Dr. Boals or Dr. Johnson can also examine your teeth and gums and recommend you to a periodontist if you have any concerns. It is critical to treat gum disease as soon as possible. If left untreated, it can ruin teeth, gums, bones, and connective tissue, as well as contribute to a number of health issues. So, plan an appointment with your dentist at least twice a year.

Dangers of Plaque

Plaque is the most common cause of gum disease. Furthermore, the bacteria in plaque create toxins or poisons that irritate the gums. They may cause them to enlarge, grow red, and bleed easily. Plaque can also solidify into calculus – or tartar — a harsh, porous substance. This can happen above or below the gum line. Periodontal disease degrades the supporting gum tissue and bone that hold teeth in place. Ultimately, it leads to permanent bone and tooth loss.

Tell Us a Little About Yourself

“My name is Samuel McNamee. I currently work for an agency that does customer service work for one of the largest tech companies in the world.

What Are Your Hobbies and Passions?

When I have free time, I love to go hiking, rock climbing, camping, just being outside all the time. You could say that I’m a woods type of person. I also like to make music and being on stage. I like to be able to entertain people. At the end of the day, if I can bring a smile to somebody’s face that’s, that’s powerful to me. This is why I think that’s why this experience has been so great for me as well.

What Inspires Your Passion for Music?

Music has been inspiring me since I was a kid. My buddy and I used to live in a very small town called Rye. There’s not a lot to do out there, no shops or businesses. So, you had to make your fun. He used to have a guitar, and I would write lyrics. We started this in elementary school. He still has sheets of paper of the songs I wrote back then. Music has been something I’ve always wanted to pursue and follow. It’s kind of my heart, I guess, in the world or the way that I can express myself.

What Do You Value Most and Why?

People, I would say that I value people. Even the people who have hurt you or betrayed you or somebody who said something snide to or let you down. You can learn a lot from that and better yourself from it. And then the people who show you love and try to respect and are there for you give you something to look forward to every day.

So, you know, when I wake up, I think it’s the very first thing that I look forward to personally is having to interact with people for the day and, overall, learn from all of the experiences that surround me.

What Made You Choose Kissing Camels Family Dentistry?

So I went to a few different Colorado Springs dental offices before. I’m going to be honest. You know, like I kind of conned into a couple of places. I came in, and my teeth were pretty bad and, it felt like there was nothing I could do about it.

I wanted to get dentures, and it seemed like every place that I called tricked me into getting a consultation or evaluation. Many of them would say that they would be able to do oral surgery onsite and then also be able to, you know, do dentures onsite. Nobody was really honest. If they were honest with me and they would’ve just said like, oh no, we don’t do that onsite. I would have been fine with that. I think it’s the fact that they misled me to get me in their door. The atmosphere is everything to me. So I, I tried it, you know, several places. And when I came into Kissing Camels Family Dentistry, the music was the first thing that caught my ear actually.

I was like, wow, this is something that I listened to. It’s actually really neat. Before I even knew that I was going to restorative dentistry, I was committed here at Kissing Camels because the staff has been so amazing, so wonderful. Think communicating very well, and they make sure you feel comfortable with what their game plan is. If you want to make adjustments to the game plan, they’re open to talking about it with you. So, you feel involved with the process. Again that no bad remarks about anywhere else I went previously. This environment and the way that they cared for me have been the best.”

Tooth Extraction Recovery Tips

Tooth Extraction Recovery Tips

Having a tooth extracted can seem like a scary experience. In reality, most emergency dentists aim to prevent tooth extractions. As your trusted dentist, keeping your natural teeth for as long as possible is always one of the top priorities. However, there are times when it obviously cannot be prevented. When a tooth extraction must be extracted as a last resort, you’ll need to find a dentist that will make sure you are comfortable before and after tooth extraction. Dr. Boals and Dr. Johnson discuss tooth extraction recovery tips below.

Why Do I Need to Get a Tooth Pulled?

As previously mentioned, your Colorado Springs dentist can only remove a tooth if it is absolutely necessary. Here are a few examples of when this may be the case:

  • Your child’s baby teeth have not fallen out. Therefore an extraction is needed for the permanent teeth to emerge.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth.
  • You are getting your teeth ready for orthodontics or other dental treatments.
  • Teeth that have not penetrated the gum line.
  • Teeth that are severely decayed or destroyed, creating issues with the dental structure.

How Much Time Will It Take to Recover?

The tooth extraction recovery process can vary depending on the seriousness of the problem and the method of extraction. Extractions come in a variety of forms, including:

  • Wisdom teeth extractions: These third molars are often extracted to avoid overcrowding, infection, deterioration, or other oral health issues.
  • Multiple tooth extraction: Whether you have injured or severely decayed teeth, or if biology is a factor in your poor oral health, you will need to have multiple teeth removed. It’s also possible that you’re getting braces and need some teeth extracted to make room for your changing teeth.
  • Extraction site preservation: If you have lost teeth, you must replace them with dental implants. However, if you do not have enough bone protection, it might be important to perform extraction site preservation so that the bone around your missing tooth can be reinforced.

In most cases, the healing process can take one to two weeks, says Dr. Boals and Dr. Johnson.

Tooth Extraction Recovery Tips

You will be given detailed instructions for post-tooth extraction recovery to ensure a smooth recovery period. Here are some pointers to consider:

  • Gently bite the gauze placed on the extraction site. The amount of bleeding will be reduced as a result of this.
  • In the days following the operation, eat softer foods and stop chewing on the side of your mouth where the tooth was removed.
  • Do not return to work right away. Take at least two days off to relax. Our friend Dr. Ryan Helgerson, an emergency dentist in Grand Junction, says that patients who jump straight back into the swing of things are likely to complicate recovery.
  • If the pain is unbearable, you should take a mild pain reliever that will be given to you. Use only as directed.
  • To minimize swelling, apply a cold compress.
  • Avoid drinking with a straw until you are fully healed.
  • Avoid cleaning the area where the extraction happened, but continue to practice proper oral hygiene.

So, if you must get a tooth extracted, make sure to follow the above tooth extraction recovery tips closely. For dental care in Colorado Springs, contact Kissing Camels Family Dentistry. We provide a variety of dental services for all ages. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Modern Family Dentist

modern family dentist Colorado Springs

Selecting a Colorado Springs dentist is an important decision. Your dentist can either positively or negatively affect your oral health. There’s a lot that should be considered when choosing a new dentist. Below, Dr. Boals and Dr. Johnson have compiled a list of things to look for in a modern family dentist.

Hours & Location

One of the first things you should consider is hours and location. Let’s be honest. If your dental office is all the way across town, you’ll never make an appointment. Find a dental office that is on your way home from work or school. A conveniently located dental office makes the trip less of a pain.

Dental Services Provided

Many dentists just offer general dentistry. When searching for the best dentist near me, find one that offers a wide variety of dental services. For example, at Kissing Camels Family Dentistry, we offer all kinds of dental services.

These include:

Finding a dentist who offers all the services you and your family could ever need ensures that you won’t have to be referred to any other dentist.

Dental Insurance/Payment

It doesn’t matter if you find the best dentist in all of Colorado. If they don’t accept your dental insurance or payment, you’ll likely have to go elsewhere. Dental insurance can be confusing, so call around and see if they accept your dental plan. Keep in mind that some dental offices offer discount plans. Dental treatments can be expensive without dental insurance, so definitely look into this before committing to treatment.

Ask Around

It’s recommended that you ask neighbors, coworkers, and family who they use for dental care. Word travels fast, whether it’s positive or negative. You can also look online or visit NextDoor for local recommendations. You’ll be able to tell if the office has a good reputation when you look online.

Emergency Dental Care

If there ever comes a time when you need emergency dental care, you’ll want to know that you’re in the right hands. Visiting a dentist who makes room in their schedule for emergency appointments is recommended. Our friend, Dr. Jordan Smith, an emergency dentist in Georgetown, KY, recommends searching for the best emergency dentists because it’ll determine if they can or cannot save your tooth in the event of an emergency situation.

Weigh The Pros and Cons

After you’ve completed all of your research on finding the best modern family dentist, you’ll be able to make a decision. If you’re on the fence between choosing between dental offices, Dr. Boals and Dr. Johnson recommend visiting the office before your appointment. That way, you can see for yourself if the team and doctor were what you expected. In need of a new modern family dentist? Contact Kissing Camels Family Dentistry today. Our office is welcoming new patients!

Benefits of Dental Bonding

benefits for dental bonding - colorado springs

Benefits of Dental Bonding

With proper love and care, teeth are meant to last a lifetime. However, things happen, and over time, it’s common for teeth to chip, fall out, or become stained. If you’re looking for an affordable way to fix these cosmetic issues, dental bonding may be an excellent option. In this article, our Colorado Springs dentist, Dr. Boals, explains the different benefits of dental bonding.

What’s Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a cosmetic dentistry technique in which tooth-colored composite material is added to the tooth. It is first applied to the outside of the tooth. Then it forms, hardens, and then will be polished. This treatment is used as a minor cosmetic treatment and is used to repair broken, chipped, or gapped teeth. Your dentist will match the dental bonding composite to your natural teeth.

Dental Bonding Pros and Cons

Dental bonding is often underrated. This treatment can really change your smile for the better. Continue reading to learn about the benefits of dental bonding:

Pros of Dental Bonding

  • Affordable  – As we said above, dental bonding is an affordable cosmetic treatment. It’s estimated to range from $300 – $600 compared to veneers that are well worth over $1,000 a tooth.
  • Less Time – This treatment can be done in less than an hour per tooth! You also won’t have to come back for additional visits.
  • Simple – Dental bonding is a very straightforward treatment compared to dental crowns or tooth extractions.
  • No recovery time necessary – Unlike many other dental treatments, there’s no downtime for recovery!

Cons of Dental Bonding

  • Potential for stains – Unlike crowns and porcelain veneers, dental bonding tends to discolor over time. If you tend to drink a lot of coffee, wine, or smoke, you’ll likely need to get your dental bonding replaced at some point. Dr. Dave Moghadam, a dentist in Easton, PA, suggests avoiding these substances for one or two days to avoid staining.
  • Not a permanent solution – In addition, the material used in dental bonding is not as solid and durable as porcelain veneers and crowns. It could chip or break if you don’t take good care of it. Dental bonding usually lasts for 3 – 7 years.

Is Dental Bonding For Me?

If you have minor problems—such as a broken or discolored tooth, a gap between your teeth, or silver fillings, then consider dental bonding. Ask your dentist in Colorado Springs, CO, for a consultation. Dr. Boals or Dr. J will address your concerns and recommend the best treatment option for your unique smile. Contact Kissing Camels Family Dentistry to schedule your appointment!
